This year, at NASS2018, the North American Spine Society’s annual meeting and exhibition, a paper authored by Dr. Christy Lane, and Vivametrica Co-founders Dr. Rick Hu and Dr. Matt Smuck received the award for outstanding paper in basic science.
This paper, Digital biomarkers of spine and musculoskeletal disease from accelerometers: Defining phenotypes of free-living physical activity in knee osteoarthritis and lumbar spinal stenosis, was published in the Spine Journal on July 17, 2018. It looks at the potential for disease-specific physical activity prescriptions through describing performance phenotypes or patterns of behaviour of individuals with lumbar spinal stenosis and knee osteoarthritis. The findings revealed performance phenotypes from analyzing accelerometry data. A novel set of features characterizing daily movement patterns in individuals with disease was found. This research sets the groundwork for more personalized approaches to measuring and improving function.
